After a long restoration, Giorgio Vasari’s Last Supper is back in the Complex of Santa Croce in Florence.

The painting was made in 1546 and consists of six panels of poplar wood. Originally done for the refectory of the Convent of the Murate in Florence, it was moved to Santa Croce since 1815, according to the soppression of monasteries wanted by Napoleon.

During the flood in 1966 the painting, kept in the Refectory of the Basilica, remained under water for twelve hours. It was saved only because of the application of rice paper on the color surface ( to prevent the detachment) and  the gradual drying under controlled humidity.
