On  April 19 2010 at the Academy Gallery in Florence we celebrated the restoration of the Pietà from Palestrina, famous marble group attributed to Michelangelo. The Pietà, purchased by the Italian State in 1939 arrived in the Museum from the Chapel of the Barberini Palace in Palestrina ( a village near Rome).

Since ages scholars have  controversial debates around this sculpture and nowadays most of them have big doubts about Michelangelo’s fatherhood of that group. First of all because of the lack of documents about it and also because of the way it was sculpted. 

The restoration was made by Cristina Samarelli belonging to the laboratory of the Soprintendenza (the State Office overlooking  the artistic estate).

Since today everybody, better if with the help of a licensed guide, can appreciate this marble group among the famous statues by Michelangelo: David, Saint Matthew and the Prisoners.
